My students GOT IT when I gave them an abacus to read, write, and round numbers to a hundred thousand! I teach math to 4th grade students in an elementary school. I teach high level learners as well as a class of 25 kids who are in an inclusion class with a special education teacher. Our school is over 50% free and reduced lunch. Our kids always stuggle with number sense which is reading, writing, and rounding numbers. Using an Abacus really helps kids see the numbers in their base 10 system!

When I introduced the Abacus in September, my kids really got it! It was one of the most exciting days of my teaching career. EVERYDAY they want to build a number on the abacus and EVERYDAY they want to review using the abacus. We do not have any supplies to build it with. We have to have beads to represent the numbers. Each place value has to have 10 beads, so we need lots of beads. The other materials I will get to build the abacus, the wood and the wood glue. My kids are so excited that they might get to build their own abacus and take it home with them to show their families this strategy of naming numbers.

I need beads. The beads represent the base 10 system. The students will each get to take their own abacus home with them to practice number sense. Students can also use this abacus to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers.

YOU will make it possible for my students to build an abacus that they can use to help them be successful when reading and writing numbers. They will be so very happy! Thanks in advance.
