Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My classroom is one that serves 50 fifth grade students. I teach Language Arts and Social Studies. We are a school that serves low income families.

In order to satisfy all the reading appetites in my classroom we need as many leveled reading books as we can get our hands on. Just like an appetite for food we each have our own taste of what we like to read and what level we can read on. Therefore if we have access to all types of reading materials then every student needs will be met or should I say satisfied!

In our classroom we need a classroom library. This library needs all types and levels of fiction and nonfiction reading material. In readers workshop the teacher teaches a skill to the whole class and then they are sent to apply that skill in their own personal book. During their independent reading time they are working with the teacher individually on material that is on their level. Therefore this allows all the students to understand and apply what has been taught to them. By having the material match the students reading level the students can focus on what is being taught and not just picking through the words to try to understand what they have just read. Having a leveled classroom library will allow the students to be exposed to different types of reading materials more frequently than just going to the library once a week. In a classroom that a teacher is trying to meet all the students’ needs this program promotes that type of instruction, but can only be successful with the appropriate materials.

Your help will ensure that my students will be able to succeed in our school reading program, and have the skills to continue to satisfy their reading cravings!
