Bilingualism, Bi-Literacy and Multiculturalism

My students need 19 Spanish books in our Dual Language classroom library.

Fifty percent of my students are Spanish speakers and fifty percent are English speakers. Eighty percent of my day is taught in Spanish. The goal of the Dual Language program is for students to be bilingual, bi-literate and multicultural after six years of full immersion in Spanish.

A big obstacle that my classroom faces is the small Spanish classroom library that we have. Both my English and Spanish speakers are shown a great interest in reading in Spanish. Our program takes a minority language like Spanish and raises its level of integrity. It makes students want to speak Spanish and not be embarrassed by it. Students want to read in Spanish. They want to speak to their parents in Spanish. They want to show off that they know Spanish. They love looking at a book and being able to read the title. My English speakers want to be able to read like my Spanish speakers in Spanish. It truly is fascinating their interest for Spanish.

I want to be able to provide my students the opportunity to read good Spanish literature. To do this we need a bigger selection of Spanish books. By having a bigger library with a vast range of Spanish books my students will be able to become fluent readers in Spanish. When my students see a new and eye catching Spanish book they just want to read it. I am amazed at how often these not only happens with my Spanish speakers but with my English speakers, who are learning how to read, write, talk and listen in Spanish as well. Studies show that after six years of being in a full immersion program students will be bilingual and bi-literate. In order to reach this goal students need to read. This will build that fluency that students need to be bi-literate.

Both my English and my Spanish speakers will benefit from this great contribution. Our program truly believes in teaching students multiculturalism and how to show empathy and respect to those who are around us.
