Laptop Leads to Limitless Learning

I currently teach Primary level students with autism in a low-income area of an urban school system. As a teacher of students with special needs, I am aware of the vital need to address each student's developmental and functional needs through their multiple learning styles and intelligences. Every additional learning experience I can provide through a different medium might just catch just one more student, in just one more way, to learn just one more concept.

As I observe my students with autism who exhibit significant deficits in communication and socialization skills interacting with and using the computer, I realize what a valuable learning tool it can be. Our classroom desktop computer does not allow us direct access during small group lessons without major, distracting physical positioning changes which are not tolerated well by the autistic population. By bringing a laptop computer to our small group lessons, I will be able to incorporate Internet/software lesson supports into daily lessons, enhancing student attending skills and engaging them in learning through their multiple intelligences. I will also be able to provide more direct instruction in the development of student computer skills and how to access educational support sites. And, as an added bonus, laptop access will provide me with an additional means to keep individual education plans (IEPs) for each of my students up-to-date by allowing me to work at home.

My students will all benefit greatly from access to a laptop computer that can be used on a more direct instructional level during daily lessons. Using the computer during small group interactive lessons will increase student interest levels and attention skills. Students will be able to independently reinforce learning by practicing skills at varied educational web sites and with learning software programs. Repetition and consistency enhances learning for the special needs population, including those on the autism spectrum. Increased independence in computer skills will provide a means for repetition and consistency. Additionally, being able to take a laptop home will allow me the opportunity to keep each student's IEP up-to-date in a more efficient and school-time effective manner.

Your participation in this proposed project will contribute to a dream come true!! New ways to learn for my special needs students and more time for me to teach at school and work at home!! You can help to make this dream a reality!!
