When Summer Comes, Who Will Keep My Students Learning?

My students need Ready for First Grade 320 page workbooks, crayons, pencils, sharpeners and a pencil box to keep all in.

When they go home for summer, there will be no learning materials. Most of these children arrived with empty backpacks on the first day of school. Almost every child in my class eats a free breakfast and lunch at school. Thirteen of them are repeating Kindergarten for the second time. Many were behind simply from lack of exposure to learning materials or pre-K.

Some children have endless supplies of paper, crayons and pencils. These children do not. I found myself very frustrated when pencils were being taken from the class. When I caught a child putting one in his backpack, he told me, "I can't do my homework without a pencil." It broke my heart. Then I started thinking about the summer. This summer my students will not be able to continue working on what we have learned in school. Then, I saw these workbooks in the store and remembered how my own boys would "play school." These books would be great for continuing the foundations of learning during the summer.

I am asking for 320 page workbooks that have colorful, fun, and inviting pages. I want triangular crayons to reinforce correct holding of pencils and crayons. I also am asking for pencils, sharpeners and a pencil box. It will be like their own little mini-office.

I really think that having these supplies will keep my students from regressing during summer. I believe they will play hard with these books. I think they will find the activities fun and they will love having their own workbooks. Thank you for considering how these supplies will keep the students prepared for next year.
