Podcasting About Literature

My students need a digital recorder that is podcast ready along with an instructional book on podcasts with which I will help them. They will also need an assortment of 24 new, high interest book titles including from "Girls from Da Hood" to "Cirque du Freak", mostly graphic novels and urban fiction, to add to our classroom library so they have interesting topics about which to podcast.

Technology is the future for our students, but advances in technology have far surpassed many of our schools' resources and readiness. I teach tenth grade in a diverse school with a high population of free and reduced lunch students. My students love technology, but most of them have limited access to it at home.

My students enjoy reading high interest fiction, but our library has limited resources. I have done what I can with our classroom library, but our curriculum is full of books about people who do not look like or have the same cultural practices as my students. My students also have enjoyed blogging about their books and creating an online environment where they can rate books and read other students' opinions about them. Many of them have talked about their passion for radio, music, and technology, but our school has limited resources. This worries me because I feel that my students from high poverty backgrounds are being left behind their middle and upper class peers in their college readiness. My graduate school experiences have been full of online chat meetings with classmates, listening to podcasts of lectures, answering blog topics. I do not see many traditional classroom teachers spanning the gap between the haves and have nots.

My students currently blog, as I mentioned, and I have created an in depth classroom webpage, but considering my students' interest in new technologies, broadcasting, and music, I thought creating podcasts about our class and having students create their own radio show to be linked off my webpage, would tap into their enthusiasm. To do this, we need a digital voice recorder, a instructional manual on podcasts, and fresh titles depicting characters who face choices similar to my students so that they have something about which to podcast. In a digital age where technology literacy will become the norm for students entering college, my students desperately need an opportunity to engage in those forums that will be utilized in their higher education.

Your help will ensure that my students do not fall behind their peers in their college preparedness. The students may not have access to technology at home, but through your contribution, I can bring new technologies to them. The best part is that students will be able to use their enthusiasm for the creative areas of literature and music to create a product that their friends and family can listen to and help spread their understandings of tenth grade English.
