Don't Hate! Mediate!

My students need 18 sweatshirts to wear when they have peer mediation duty.

Being a first year guidance counselor at a K-8 charter school in Ohio, I came in with a clear vision: to empower my students to believe in themselves and find self-worth and passion for learning. Our school is truly a beacon of light in a crime ridden, high poverty area of the city. Most of our students came to us because they were unsuccessful in their previous school(s). Many of our students have behavioral challenges they must overcome so they can be successful in the classroom.

Several students show natural leadership ability. Their peers come to them for advice and guidance. At first, I was alarmed at some of the advice being given but then it dawned on me that this situation created a perfect opportunity to empower them to be truly trained leaders in their school. With cooperation from teachers, staff and administration, we began interviewing students for peer mediation training. I was overwhelmed at the response. I had not done this before but I read, read and read some more! 18 dedicated young people have put in over 18 hours of training, even on weekends to earn their peer mediation certificate. As part of the training program, we watched several training videos. These videos were taped at schools with much bigger budgets than ours. There were professionally made signs, request boxes, business cards, etc. for the mediation programs. My students did not complain about what they lacked. They were just excited to get the program up and running! The one item I would like to provide my team with is a sweatshirt with the logo they created printed on it. DON'T HATE! MEDIATE!

Our budget provides no money for any purchases above and beyond the needed materials. My students are so very excited to begin their program. My wish is for them to have recognition in the school when they are on "duty". Our art teacher has graciously agreed to silk screen the sweatshirts at no additional cost. He has a business on the side that will allow him to do this.

Please help me empower these students. The peer mediation program has the potential to build future leaders in our community. Those who have put in so much time and effort into their training will be a visible presence in our building so students will know who they can turn to in order to peacefully solve problems. With so much violence in our world today, I don't feel like a program such as this is a school perk. It is sorely needed. I appreciate your time and consideration in helping me make this happen for my kids.
