Technology for the Gifted

My students need 5 webcams to be used for world wide communication through Skype.

I am a gifted specialist at a Title 1 school in a small, rural town. Currently, I am teaching at three different schools and the students range from 8 - 14 years old. This is a challenge because I can't teach gifted education like it should be taught. My time is limited with my students, so when I see them I want them to have the ultimate experience - no time is wasted!

When my students come to me for their enrichment time, the first thing they ask me is, "Are we going to get to use the laptops?" Students are challenged by the use of technology. I would like to be able to offer the use of webcams, but our school, and many others, cannot afford to purchase any "unnecessary" items.

The resources needed for this project to be successful is 5 webcams. If we had webcams to utilize, I will be able to show my students that there is a life beyond their one stoplight. I want the students to be able to study and speak to people worldwide and also communicate with professionals and other classrooms.

Your help will give my students the opportunity to explore their interests and strengthen their knowledge about the world. My students have no idea what students in other countries learn, how students in New York were affected by 9/11, how the Chinese are taught the English language, how authors get their ideas for stories, how other surrounding schools prepare for Battle of the Books - my list could go on and on. My goal for the students is for them to be exposed to life outside of our school and their "hometown."
