Love those CSI shows? My students sure do and they can’t wait to participate in an interdisciplinary unit that involves the entire 7th grade and all the core subjects!

We are a small middle school in North Carolina with a mix of students from throughout the county. Our emphasis is on Math, Science, and Technology which we enhance with several units each year that are interdisciplinary (involving all subject areas). This gives the students a chance to see that learning is not limited to one subject in one classroom and to make the connections across the board. We have offered Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) units in the past, but as with all lessons, wanted to make improvements. One of the 7th grade math teachers and I (7th and 8th grade science teacher) chose to give up a week of our summer break to attend a CSI seminar for teachers. We had the unique privilege of working with experts in the field of forensics to observe a mock crime scene, analyze evidence, and determine the perpetrator.

This wonderful experience gave us the tools we needed to improve our CSI unit to one we believe the students will truly enjoy and will learn many new skills. Students will be studying a mock crime scene, analyzing blood spatter for angle of trajectory and height differentials (using geometry and algebra skills) and analyzing other evidence collected (hair samples) to determine the perpetrator (deductive and inductive reasoning skills). Our greatest obstacle is funding for the supplies the students will need to carry out this investigation. The large budget cuts to education this year have meant very little money for our science lab to purchase supplies. We have had to modify several of our regular laboratory lessons due to reduced funding. I have requested 8 calipers and 15 magnifiers for the students to measure simulated blood spatter to determine height differential and trajectory. I have also requested a Hair Analysis Kit for other evidence the students can analyze from the mock crime scene. These are items which we can use from year to year for our CSI unit as well as have available for other laboratory experiences.

With your help, my students will be able to experience a meaningful interdisciplinary lesson utilizing skills from science, math, language arts, and social studies as they investigate a mock crime scene, analyze evidence, write reports, and bring their perpetrator to justice!
