I teach ninth grade students who are not yet reading at ninth grade reading level. This class is unique as it incorporates technology, independent reading, and group work.

As a result, these kids begin to give up. School becomes so frustrating because of their reading level. I have students that range from first grade reading level to seventh grade. Their other classes require them to be at grade appropriate reading level and they are not. This class has shown wonderful success in achieving that goal.

As a result, the students would benefit from working headphones. The ones we have now are old and falling apart. I also do not have enough novels for all students to read. My students need 8 more headphones and 3 more novels (Night, Before We Were Free, and Swallowing Stones) to read and increase their reading level.

If these students can learn to read, that gives them hope. If they can reach their reading level they then have hope and skill. If they have hope and skill we, as a society, have a better chance of keeping these kids in school.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
