SAT Books for College Readiness Program

My students need 25 SAT books for their college readiness after school program. They currently average less than 400 points per section on the SAT,and they need books in order to practice and improve by April.

I teach 11th grade math in one of the poorest neighborhoods in New York, and only five of our graduating seniors last year went on to four-year colleges.

My juniors are preparing to take their SATs in the spring, and the average scores on diagnostic tests have all been less than 400 points per section. Indeed, according to an August Wall Street Journal article, the achievement gap in scores between African American/Latino students and the rest of the population has only widened in the last year. However, despite the massive obstacle these students face in raising their test scores, they have not been deterred. My students still dream of becoming aeronautical engineers and doctors, architects and forensic scientists. They have not lost sight of their desire to go on to a four-year university; unfortunately, their scores are holding them back from success.

About half of my students have signed up for an after-school and Saturday college readiness class that will help them prepare for the SATs. However, my students cannot afford the SAT books that families in more privileged neighborhoods readily purchase for their kids. Without a way to practice the challenging problems that appear on the test, my students are at a great disadvantage when it comes to scoring at the level necessary to gain admission into a four-year university.

Your help will enable my students to achieve their big goal of raising their score by 200 points per section on the SAT in order to get into college.
