Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Reading and Writing to 7th and 8th graders. The courses equips students with the reading and writing skills necessary to read and understand grade-level texts, while aiming to prepare students to succeed in high school and higher education as well as become insightful members of society.
In our current writing unit, my middle school students have been studying the Freedom Writers and how lives can be changed by the power of writing. As their teacher, I have been so amazed at the ways I have seen my students open up their struggles. They have been starting to tell their stories, and have begun to realize that even as teenagers, they have a valuable voice that needs to be heard. This study, modeled after The Freedom Writers Diary, has proven to be an authentic way to help students see the hope within their current situations, and to help them realize their bright futures. As a means to celebrate their success and growth within this unit, I am requesting 18 copies of The Freedom Writers Diary books for each student to own. Their personal copies will be distributed during a Freedom Writers banquet during which they will be sharing diary entries, change poems, and toasts for change amongst their peers, families, and community members. Owning these books will encourage my students to continue in this exploration of the power of their voice in the form of the written word. The cost of this proposal is $195.00 which includes shipping for any material requested and fulfillment.
Our school serves a highly diverse, low-income community full of bright, motivated students yearning for the opportunity to better their lives. Unfortunately, there is little budget to cover these expenses. By engaging in this rigorous academic content early in their academic careers, our school seeks to improve college readiness and provide opportunities to students who might otherwise be left behind by society. Your contribution to this endeavor will help ensure that students from all backgrounds are exposed to challenging ideas and concepts.
Please help these students realize how valuable they are and that they have their own profound story that must be told.
