I teach English I at a neighborhood school in an urban school district. My students are ninth graders, many of which receive Special Education services.

At my high school there are three first year teachers with English I classes. Even though we are new teachers we are quickly learning how far behind our students are because of all the pressures they face daily inside and outside the classroom. One thing this means is that none of our students are on grade level in reading. (1/3 of our students receive Special Education services.) The majority of our students are on a 4th-6th grade reading level, but some students are on a Pre-K-1st grade reading level. Their reading levels make it really hard to teach literature because they simply can't read it, and therefore shut down instead of let anyone know they can't read it. That being said, the English I teachers are simply DREADING teaching Romeo and Juliet this year. I'm afraid my students will shut down before giving the story a try. I know they will love the story if they can understand what they are reading.

This is why my school needs (30) copies of "Romeo and Juliet The Graphic Novel" in order to teach this play! Reading Shakespeare in this form reaches three learning modalities (visual, linguistic, and auditory since we'll read it aloud), which means that the students are more likely to understand and retain what they read because they will get the information in three ways. Getting my students engaged in literature is a battle because they assume they can't relate to the content. But I know they will like Romeo and Juliet because the story is familiar to them. I think this will get them to do their work, and show them their learning potential.

My students often complain about our school not looking nice or having a lot of resources. They feel like they don't deserve a lot of things because of where they live and what they've lived through, and I want to show them that they're wrong. I think getting funded through donations will show them they're wrong. Being able to read the text they're given will help my students work on their critical thinking skills. They are often kept at low-level thinking because of their inability to get through a text to analyze it. I know they are capable of understanding and critiquing Romeo and Juliet. Many of my students don't plan to go to college right now, and it is because so much of what they do at school is daunting. They need to be able to understand their potential to see what their potential can mean for their futures. *These books will be shared among (3) classrooms.
