Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 4th grade in a school with over 80% of my students on free/reduced lunch. Additionally, we only have 10% of the current fourth grade class reading on grade level.

In order to improve their reading skills, our school purchased a subscription to Accelerated Reader (AR). Students read books at their level independently. Once they are done reading, they go to the computer to take a comprehension test on the book. My students love taking the test on the computer. My students need 1 HP netbook so they can take their test online.

With students reading at 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade level, books suitable for them are generally picture books. Students usually finish these picture books in less than 10 minutes. Since we don't have enough computers in the library, they have to wait until they get to the classroom to take the AR test. In the meantime, they are stuck with a book they have already read until they can get to a computer to take the comprehension test.

Your generosity will ensure that my students will be able to take their AR test once they are done reading; thus, providing instant feedback to their reading. Once they have taken the test, they can check out a new book from the library. After all, in order to be a better reader, one must READ, READ, READ. We thank you and appreciate any contributions you are able to make.
