Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first year teacher, teaching fourth grade at a very low income, high need school in Arizona. All of my students receive free or reduced lunch and they come from homes that greatly lack structure. They are an incredibly wonderful group of students who want nothing more than to expand their horizons and learn about the world. They have their entire futures ahead of them.

My students absolutely love music and they especially love using music to learn. They don't come from homes where different types of music are readily available. They are generally only familiar with current hip-hop and rap. My students have yet to be exposed to so many wonderful types of music. They really enjoy being new genres of music and incorporating music into their learning experience. Using different types of music in this positive nature, could open up so many doors for these children who come from so little. I have tried using the resources I already have in my classroom to provide music for my students. My students love it and have responded well in their learning, but it isn't the best situation. What I already have isn't enough to really make this program work well for my students. In order to really provide the best music enrichment situation for my students, we need to have the perfect set up.

In order to effectively implement music in my classroom, I am in need of an iPOD dock with a remote that I can control from anywhere in the classroom. This will allow me to time the music for my students enjoyment and enrichment. Music is proven to help students learn and internalize the material. They can more easily engage in their learning when they are hearing information related to their learning. Music can also be used as a tool for students to relax and control the mood in the classroom. Not only will music in the classroom help to promote and enrich their learning, but it will also provide the structure that they are greatly lacking at home. Music can be used to structure lessons. It can be used to open and close the day, for daily routines, and to inform students. It provides structure to their day at school which can positively translate into their behavior.

Your help will give my students the gift of music. Music is tremendously important in all of our lives and it can have an enormous impact of these students. Everyone has those songs that they hear and think of a specific and wonderful time in their life. I want this for my students. I want them to have amazing music that they associate with learning. Music can help us not only in one academic area but across our entire curriculum and in their lives outside of school. Please help us rock and roll and engage in our studies while we are learning about algebra, graphs, and nonfiction text. This is much more than just speakers, but it will give students a lifetime of musical appreciation.
