My students need 20 thesauruses in order to create poetry that taps into their full potential as writers.

Thesaurus Rex eats repetitive poetry. He stomps out "great," "stuff," and "bad." My seventh grade language arts students get into poetry writing every year. I serve students from urban public housing, approximately 50% are free and reduced lunch. Their resources at home are limited, but their life experiences are dramatic and compelling. As their teacher, I want to them to be able to find the words to express themselves in writing. Without a thesaurus, they must come to me for those words, "What's another way to say...?" This stifles their creative process. With thesauruses in our room, students would be able to search for words themselves, and enjoy the process of discovering just the right word.
