To learn 21st century skills, we need 21st century access. To become independent learners and thinkers, knowledge is gained at the library. The students in my school range from Pre-K to 5th grade, and I serve them ALL! Our school has a high population of economically disadvantaged and at-risk students.

In order to teach the skills students need to become successful citizens in this technologically advanced era, we first need the technology to give the lesson. In the library, research skills are essential. However, these skills cannot be taught without being able to project databases and websites, or to show author sites and book trailers. Nor can the spontaneous learning be captured without a camera.

With a wireless keyboard and mouse, the projector can be set up so the instructor can navigate the computer from the projector, rather than have his or her back to the students. This allows the teacher librarian to be IN the lesson, engaging the students and not having to break momentum by running back and forth between computer and projector. Often in the library, we will visit authors using Skype. The students need the computer speaker to hear what the author is saying. Also, author's have their own websites and many of them feature videos and audio that cannot be heard without speakers. The library is also a place for creation. A digital camera can let the students make literacy based projects, such as Claymation retellings, or to create a book trailer on the latest book they have read.

Your help will make it possible for my students to be able to learn the latest in technology search strategies, virtually visit with an author, and allow students to create projects using the latest software and digital photography.
