My students need 21 biographies about famous people that interest them.

Our school teaches approximately 580 7th and 8th grade students. 10% of the students are LEP (limited English proficient), 20% are from low income households, and we have a 7% mobility rate. 11% of our students have an IEP, and receive special education services. We also have a very large population of students with autism in our building.

Our current biography section contains 516 titles that are considered "aged", which is 20 years or older! Our students are excited this year to complete their biography projects, but not excited about some of the titles we have in our collection. They have no idea who Knute Rockne is (published in 1970), and they would rather read about someone who is relevant to their lives today.

We are in some serious need of HELP to create a more current collection of biographies that our students will want to read! I have selected 21 titles, containing famous entertainers, from a survey I gave the students at the beginning of the year. I gave the survey to determine what titles I should buy to meet our students' interests.

If you were between 11-13 years old, would you be interested in reading about John James Audubon (published in 1954), or Simon Bolivar, the Great Liberator (also published in 1954)? Neither do my students. Some of our teachers don't even know who some of these people are! How can they get our students excited about reading these biographies if they aren't even aware of who these people are? We are in some serious need of updating our collection, and we could really use some generous help!
