My Students Want to Be Film Makers!

My students need a camcorder to record special events such as: African American History Programs, sporting events, graduations, Math Family Night, during the school day.

Our public school is located in the inner city, a primarily low income family area, of NY. I am the computer teacher to grades K-4.

My students are learning basic computer and photography skills, and my 3rd and 4th graders have acquired an interest in film making. They would like to showcase special events that take place in our school and learn how to operate a video camera.

My students thrive on technology, but we are unable to provide them with the same resources as nearby richer school districts. I would like to give them the opportunity to learn basic film making and would just love to provide a camcorder for my students to do so.

The only option most of my students see as a way out of the inner city is becoming a rapper or basketball player. I don't think they know that the odds of that are very slim. Since the sad reality is that almost half of our students drop out of school by age 16, I would like to have my students explore other interests that could actually become a career. Even if they don't pursue film making, I would like to start an film making club that keeps my students off the streets after school.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
