Food is our common ground, a universal experience. (James Beard) I am a second year teacher with the Public School system. I have two wonderful groups, (20 in each), of three and four year old children representing rich and diverse cultural backgrounds. One of our favorite activities is cooking together.

When reading some of the books in our curriculum, we extend the conceptual understanding by creating a concrete model of the foods and celebrations written about in the story. Often times, we assemble a dish at school but must then do the cooking at my home. The completion of the lesson takes place the next day when I can return with the finished product. This lapse of time causes a break in sequencing and diminishes the children's enthusiasm.

In order to carry out our culinary projects in a timely and unified manner, we need a portable burner. This would allow my young learners to participate in the cooking process from beginning to end. How much more meaningful this would be! As we look forward to one of our favorite story sets, "Hooray, A Pinata,"and "The Tortilla Factory," we could use flour and the burner to make tortillas and crepe paper to construct a pinata!!We could then refer to the "talking globe" to explore the locations of countries that celebrate with tortillas and pinatas. (In the future, of course, our travels could take us around the earth!) How exciting would that be? So many areas of science, math, social studies, nutrition, and interpersonal relations would be cultivated.
