"In my Title 1 school, getting funding for classroom supplies is difficult due to budgets constantly getting defeated. In my class of 21 third graders, about half are basic skills learners. They struggle academically in most subject areas because they have a hard time understanding what they read.

The one thing my students have conveyed to me this year is that they want to become better readers. Many of them actually say they love to read, but they have a hard time comprehending what has been read. The activities we are asking for in this proposal will provide them with the tools they need to understand what they read. Unfortunately, because of the economy and defeated budgets, it is left to the teacher to provide any extra supplies. But you can help!

My students will get a better visualization of the reading comprehension strategies with the Comprehension Teaching Charts. These interactive charts will allow the students to become active participants in the lesson. It has been proven that students learn more from lessons that they take part in! This will also ring true with the sentence structure activity books and reading comprehension wheel. The students will not even realize they are learning when they spin the wheel to answer a reading question! Students will also be able to be held accountable during their independent reading using the reader's response bookmarks. These bookmarks will allow me to assess their understanding immediately. Finally, we are asking for the test-taking strategy overhead kit. Together, my students and I can review strategies to take and pass a test. This is a skill that is rarely taught- but certainly needs to be!

With your help, you can make it possible for my students to gain a better understanding of what they read. When a student can comprehend what they read, they will succeed in every subject!

My students need to build their Reading Comprehension with materials including a Spin & Answer Reading Wheel, Developing Comprehension Teaching Charts, Test-Taking Overhead Kit, Sentence Skills Books, and Reader's Response Bookmarks. The cost of this proposal is $285, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ?."

Dear Lisa, Greta, Pamela, Edwin, Kelly and Anonymous Donor,

I cannot fully express my gratitude for your generous donations to my classroom. I cannot wait to share your generosity with my students. For them to see that there are individuals out there who care about them and their education is priceless!

We will be putting these new reading tools to good use. We can't wait to get started! You have helped to enhance our centers, and my students will not only become smarter because of you- but will also have more fun in the classroom! How can we ever thank you enough?

With gratitude,
Ms. P.
