It's Not About Winning or Losing!

My students need 10 math strategy games.

Math isn't only about addition and subtraction worksheets! That's what I tell my class of 18 first graders. These six and seven year olds live in a rural Alaskan community, where more than half of the school students qualify for free or reduced school lunches. Some live in substandard housing, without running water or electricity.

One of the most exciting times of the day for me is the afternoon math class. The students are eager and interested, and they absorb the curriculum's concepts with speed. There is a broad range of math skills, including the important and sometimes overlooked "higher level thinking skills." Games are great for developing thinking skills like analyzing, strategizing, logic, and thinking ahead. Games can engage students in learning how to think while also encouraging them in the development of social relationships. And games are fun and engaging; students are motivated to learn through games.

I recently purchased three sets of the ancient strategy game Mancala, and my students were hooked. Now they are eager for more challenges, more fun, more learning! The students would greatly benefit from the addition of 10 more math strategy games to our classroom.

The addition of math games to the math program will keep these budding mathematicians interested and involved and learning important life skills that will serve them well for the rest of their lives.
