Drama, Dogs, and Double Dutch, Oh My!

My students need 30 copies of both "Because of Winn Dixie" by Kate DiCamillo and "Double Dutch" by Sharon Draper, as well as an audio recording of "Because of Winn Dixie".

I teach 8th grade Communication Arts in a high-needs, urban middle school in Missouri that was almost closed last year due to lack of community involvement and low student test scores.

Increasing my students' literacy skills is my goal as a first-year middle school teacher. My students have a hard time keeping sustained focus on a task or a topic and I would like to build their attention spans by teaching longer works. The problem is that I have no classroom sets of any novels. They adore dogs--really, any animals--so, I would like to start with Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. I've also requested the audio recording to accompany the class set because my students are building their reading fluency. Next, I would like to focus on a book that mirrors aspects of my students own experiences--Double Dutch by Sharon Draper. In this book, one of the character harbors the secret that she can't read and has been shuffled through the public school system without anyone noticing.

In an informal poll, I discovered that most of my students have never read a novel cover-to-cover. I find this sad and shocking, but I endeavor to give my students a supportive environment in which to complete this milestone. These classroom sets will allow my students the opportunity to engage with longer texts and learn how to increase their attentions spans and their memories.

Your help will allow my students to have the opportunity to increase their literacy skills and be introduced to novels that they will enjoy. Please give my students the chance to do what their peers at better-funded schools have been doing for at least several more years than my students--reading a book.
