Making the Reading/Writing Connection

My students need 47 high quality literature books so that they can use them as mentor texts to learn specific writing skills.

Mrs. Geraci Pin Oak Middle School
Bellaire, TX Grades 6-8

I teach sixth grade English in an urban school in Texas. We are 100% Title One. Because we are a magnet school, my students come from all over the area and have a wide range of abilities and interests.

I use writer's workshop methodology in my classroom. However, I have few mentor texts for my children. The key to being successful with the workshop method, is to have a classroom rich in texts.

We will use these books to see how real writers write. I have chosen a wide selection of myths and fables, biography, and high quality fiction. These books will enhance our corresponding writing units.

Try this yourself. Take a piece of text that you enjoyed and pick out a sentence you thought was well-constructed. Study that sentence. Think about what makes it work. Pick Out the parts: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs. Pick out the figurative language. Does it use imagery? Alliteration? Similes? Metaphors? Now, using those bits and pieces you have identified, write a sentence in the same style. How did you do? The first sentence is usually a little rough, but can be tweaked, so that it really sings. This is what I am doing for my students. I am giving them texts with wonderful sentences and ideas and showing them how to recreate that effect.
