I am an early childhood special education teacher at the Bismarck Early Childhood Education Program. I teach a preschool class that consists of 3 to 5 year old children. My classroom is made up of Head Start students, students with special needs and community models. The wide range of abilities in my classroom presents a challenge in providing a variety of developmentally appropriate materials for all learners in my classroom

I have been sharing a classroom and supplies with a colleague and recently had to move to another classroom. Almost all of the materials belonged to my colleague, therefore, I don't have a lot of manipulatives to use with my class. Unfortunately, the funding is not available from my school to purchase all the good quality items I need for my classroom.

During the early years of learning so much is taught and learned through use of hands on materials. This is most certainly true in the area of math readiness. A variety of counting objects, sorting objects, patterning materials, shapes, games and puzzles will help my students get off on the right start. I could provide a much richer learning environment for the students I work with if I had the materials to enhance each lesson and encourage generalization throughout life.

In order to lay the good math foundation that our children need, I need the materials. With your help I can lay that foundation for the next teachers to build on. Without your help, my students will not have that strong foundation to build on for many years to come.
