News in the Classroom, Then and Now

My students need 20 copies of scholastic news magazines, wall maps, an Eggspert game, and Social Studies Independent Project Center.

My classroom is a 5th grade emotional/behavioral special education classroom. They are a fast paced group of boys who enjoy learning through hands-on projects, visuals, and connections to real life experiences.

Currently we lack social studies resources. My classroom is fascinated by world facts and current events. The more non-fiction, the better.

Having copies of weekly current event magazines (Weekly Reader and Time for Kids) and the resources to explore and understand them would benefit my class through deepening their understanding of our society, then and now, while building their reading and writing skills. When discussing events it would be helpful to be able to refer to maps to better there understanding of the world location. Dry erase maps would be a great tool for that. Since my class is very hands-on, maps and interactive discussions are great ways of engaging them. The "Eggspert" tool will allow us to have quiz like game show discussions and check-ins on content understanding. "Eggspert" will give student to buzz in when answering questions about what we have read and/or discussed. This will help to control impulsive answering aloud.
