Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am trying to inspire power in the powerless. I teach reading to an incredible class of 35 8th graders, all of whom show stunning potential, but at the moment, have no hope in their future. We study in a high needs school, so many of my kids are more worried about where they will sleep than their homework. But for me, that is no excuse. I have high expectations, which my students are beginning to fulfill. Each day in class we talk about struggle, power, and inspiration. I hope that eventually my efforts will have an impact on them; I am so lucky to be their teacher.

I have finally succeeded in planting the desire to read, but we have a massive obstacle preventing our progress: no books. This book in particular is about human rights and the power of the individual, which is why I chose it. My students need a story. They need something to hope for. They need to be inspired. They need this book.

Originally I had planned on getting a weekend job to purchase these books, but a friend told me of this website. This is my attempt to get my students what they deserve while preserving the few hours of rest I get each week. We are so excited of potentially getting these books. Currently, we are over a year behind in reading, but because they are truly excited to read this book on human rights and justice, I know their reading scores would improve. Not only would this gift inspire, it would quantitatively benefit our students.

I cannot do this job alone. You may never meet my kids, but in a way, they are your kids too. Every teacher has the gift of looking the future in the eyes everyday. However, sometimes I see haze and hopelessness. By helping us with this project, you are single-handedly erasing the haze, replacing it with optimism and intelligence. Please help me educate our future.
