Developing the ability to read and write well is a critical step on the path to college. The 11th graders in my AP English and English III classes know they're building skills that will enable them to achieve their dreams. Our KIPP school, a small rural high school in North Carolina, focuses all students on success in college. The community is resource-poor but rich with aspiration.

In English class, it is important to engage students in multiple ways. Our students attend school from 8am to 5pm everyday, so keeping them interested and learning is a must. To build each student’s comprehension and skills in reading and writing, I use interactive lessons where we review a passage from a great book. In the group discussion that follows, we often dissect the writing, digging into each of the words and the flow of the writing. Twain’s “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” comes to life when we pour over humorous sections. Additionally, we review as a group a student’s writing and offer suggestions for how that student can improve the clarity and vibrancy of their writing. These techniques help each student master important concepts in the ways that work for her.

This approach to reading and writing requires the right tools to get the job done. It would be a very helpful support to have a document camera. The camera would enable these techniques to become much more interactive and alive for students. They would be able to “write on” the passage, highlighting parts they want to discuss in more depth. They would be able to make modifications for all students to see. This viewer would make my class and my students’ learning much more efficient as it would focus our time on instruction and interactivity. It will also build their skills at editing, which is very important for success on the battery of tests (NCLB, SAT, etc.) that students face on the road to college.
