I work in a low-income area of New York City. My students all have such high aspirations to become doctors or writers, but without quality reading material, their dreams may be lost.

The students in my class all have such a desire to learn and read, but they always complain that most of our classroom library is boring, or has books from the 70's. They want reading material that is fun for them, especially when they read independently. Recently, there has been a lot of focus on "fantasy" in our media, with the Harry Potter series and the Twilight Saga. My students want to be a part of that. Almost all of them saw the first Twilight movie, and are very excited about the second. When I tell them that the book is so much greater, they get a look of jealousy on their faces that say, "why do you get to read the book, and I don't?" So I brought them in my personal copy to share, but they'd really love a classroom set.

That is why I have asked for two classroom sets of the Twilight Saga, as well as ten Roald Dahl books and a few others to add to out classroom selection. The students will fall in love with reading if they could only have books to fall in love with. They will use these books mostly during independent reading time, but I will also use them during our creative writing unit in April. The Twilight Saga is so intriguing to young teenagers, that I think it will truly encourage them to want to write more and read more. These skills will help them as they move through their education, but also in their day-to-day lives.
