My students need 20 subscriptions to READ magazine, 10 copies each of 6 book titles, including "The Freedom Writers Diary" and 5 copies of "Bronx Masquerade".

My class is a dynamic language arts course with students from a variety of low-income and multicultural backgrounds.

The students in my class are bright and eager to learn, but have difficulty connecting with traditional works of literature. They yearn for pieces with situations in which they can see themselves and characters with whom they can empathize. These fiction and non-fiction works offer inviting formats, topics, and characters with whom my students can connect.

My students need literary circle book sets of contemporary fiction and non-fiction titles from "Zlata's Diary" to "Monster," and a class subscriptions to READ. Because these texts are more inviting, my students read them more carefully and respond to them more enthusiastically. It is my belief that this will provide them with a stronger literary foundation which will make the remainder of their high school years more rewarding and pave the way to graduation and a successful college career. These powerful pieces will open up a literary world which might otherwise remain closed to them forever.
