I am a reading specialist at a Title I school in Virginia. We have students in grades Kindergarten through third grade. Our school is the largest Title I school in our district. Most of the students at my school do not have books in their homes and have not had exposure to literature across the curriculum. One goal for my school is to provide a word study program based on Words Their Way. Words Their Way is a program developed through the University of Virginia. This program combines phonics, vocabulary, and spelling instruction. The heart of the program lies in individualizing instruction based on specific student needs.

The Words Their Way program is made up of weekly sorts and a literature connection for each. Teaching a child to sort by spelling feature provides a systematic approach that can be used over time and across reading levels. Link, Link, Chain is one method of teaching a child to break down words by onset and rime(/c/ + at = cat). Learning to link, link, chain helps a child use a known word (cat) to learn an unknown word (fat). After the child has learned to sort the words in isolation, it is important that the child can use that understanding in context. The beauty of the program is that each child's word study needs are custom fitted. Having materials available for students to make literature connections is an important part of the program. Because of generous education stimulus money, we have been able to purchase authentic literature. It is arriving daily, but we have no place to store it.

We need basic organizational supplies (labels, boxes, binders, sheet protectors, and hanging folders) to organize the literature connection materials so that all teachers can find what they need to prepare individualized instruction. These literature connection materials will be stored in magazine files with labels. Master copies single sheet literature connections will be stored by feature in sheet protectors in organized 3-ring binders. Additional materials will be organized in hanging file folders.

Teachers are asked to individualize lessons for each student in their classroom. Finding the materials quickly and effectively can mean the difference between frustration and success. You can be part of the success! These materials will help the teachers in my building match materials to students quickly and effectively. Students will individually receive the materials they need to succeed on their instructional level.
