I am creating a motivational activity that provides incentives for students who are working towards achieving the goals that they have set in my Learning Skills class. Learning Skills is a class that supports middle school students, with a variety of learning needs, to manage their workload in each of their mainstream classes. Each student develops and works towards goals that will help them become more successful in school.

The students enrolled in my class are primarily 6th graders. They work hard to navigate their middle school environment, which involves a fast paced curriculum, multiple classroom and teacher changes throughout the day, and a workload that needs to be prioritized and completed on a daily basis. They have developed admirable goals for themselves. “I want to start my homework as soon as I get home.” “I will study for tests and get good grades.” Each student works with me to further define these goals and has dedicated themselves to habits that will help them succeed in school.

I am creating an activity where the students will earn classroom dollars for taking steps towards achieving their goals. On designated days, throughout the year, we will hold an auction. Students can bid on the items purchased with your donation dollars. Items include things that will have appeal to middle school students such as floating magnets, mini magnifying glass, colorful highlighter tape that can be used in their textbooks and removed when they are finished, balls, modeling clay, solar calculators, and timers.

Even though my students have shown an intrinsic motivation to succeed in school, as the year progresses it can become more and more difficult to maintain that motivation. This activity will help them to stay focused on their goals, to feel acknowledged for the work that they put in to achieving those goals, and to help them remember that learning is fun!
