Small town...hay capital of America. We have a stop sign in the center of town. They call you by name when you go get the mail. Everyone at the bank says hi and asks about your family. People text you to let you know that your boy is holding hands with a girl and want to make sure that's okay with you. If there's something going on in the evening, it's either at the school or the church. On Friday night home games, they make an announcement that there will be Fifth Quarter at the Baptist Church after the game. That's pizza and music if you're wondering. Sports is a big deal in our town. It gets some of our kids to college who might not be able to afford to go otherwise. There's one elementary school, and a middle school right next door to the high school less that a mile away. This is where I grew up, played ball (my senior class won the state basketball championship just so you know that we are definitely on the map), and now this is where I am working as a math teacher and coach. Because we are a small community, and therefore a small school system, the coaches work together to help with several sports. Naturally, football, basketball, and baseball are huge. I love those sports too, but I am also coaching a golf team and really trying to encourage greater participation in golf. You can get too old or injured for some sports, but not for golf. Now I'm getting to the part about needing your help. We literally practice in the pasture. Oh sure, I make arrangements to take my kids on a school bus to a nearby city to play, but that doesn't happen as often as I would like. When we play other teams who regularly practice at the country club, we are at a disadvantage even though our kids are really skilled. In fact, one of my players just received a $40,000 scholarship through a free program called First Tee of (the nearby city). This scholarship will pay for his college education. Since we don't practice on a regular course all the time, having a couple of golf gps's would help level the playing field for us with our competition. If you are a golfer, you already know that handheld units are common, at least with other schools. These devices measure the golf course while answering a golfer's key query, "What is the distance to the green?" I could tell you a lot more about this technology, but maybe you will just believe me when I tell you that we need these in order to really be competitive in a sport that my kids can enjoy for a lifetime. Is it critically important for my 25 middle and high school students to have the advantages to be able to truly be competitive in this sport? Well, remember the $40,000 scholarship. It was pretty important to that kid. Would you lend us a hand? Would you put a golf gps unit in our hand? We would truly appreciate your help. Oh, and come see us at Hay Day. It's a lot of fun!
