Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We are a class of Social Studies-lovers! Our classroom is a general education fifth grade class in New York. My students are approximately 75% English Language Learner students, and 95% qualify for the government-funded free breakfast and lunch programs. Ours is a high-need school in a low-income community where students have the odds stacked against them; even in the face of these odds, my students are the hardest-working and dedicated ten year-olds I've ever been lucky enough to teach.

My students do not have access to technology and multimedia that enables them to view Social Studies materials in a hands-on way. Instead of watching Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream Speech," students read the leader's words in their textbooks; as an alternative to listening to Afro-Cuban music rooted in the Harlem Renaissance, students read about the music in books. Without multimedia that allows students to engage directly with the content, Social Studies can start to seem a little boring.

My students love Social Studies, but I know they'd be even more excited about it if they had a way to really get their hands into it! Technology shapes the way young people see the world around them, past and present, so it makes sense to integrate it into our classroom. An iPod Touch would allow students to watch and hear so many of the people, places, and events that comprise Social Studies, long ago and today!

Your help will ensure that my students are able to engage with Social Studies materials in a real-life, hands-on way. Through this technology, Social Studies will come alive in our fifth grade classroom!
