Reading Makes a Difference

My students need several different nice prizes including mp3 players, flash drives, basketballs, backpacks, and cameras. These prizes will be used in a school wide literacy program to encourage reading among our students.

Literacy is a pressing issue in urban schools today. I teach reading at a school in a low-income community, and the number of students that are below grade level in reading is atrocious. My school is a public middle school (seventh and eighth grade) in an urban region of Missouri.

Because our students are in an urban, low-income neighborhood school, the opportunities to increase literacy have been scarce. Not only is there a lack of high interest books, there is also a lack of incentive or motivation. In most of our students' lives, there are things that seem more important to them than learning how to read.

Fortunately, thanks to DonorsChoose, many of our classrooms are equipped with high interest texts that the kids can read. However, we now need to work on the investment piece. For that reason, our communication arts department is starting a school wide literacy incentive program. It is called "Read for Change," and involves public tracking of how much time individual students spend reading. In this proposal, we are asking for a variety of prizes including flash drives, backpacks, and basketballs. Not only will students be motivated by the prizes provided in this proposal, they will also be motivated when they see the numbers their friends are putting up in "minutes read." We are hoping that this program will help us to make reading "cool" among our students.

Your help will ensure that our students have the opportunity to earn high quality prizes. They will have a tangible reminder of their success, as well as the self confidence and satisfaction of knowing how much they have accomplished.
