Leap Frog Lending Library!

My students need 9 sets of leveled readers and 2 sets of Eyewitness Nonfiction Readers.

"Everybody! Be quiet! We're tryin' to LEARN!" a number of my children have begun to shout when our reading instruction is disrupted. My children, fifteen self-described "enthusiastic" first graders from a low-income, rural Louisiana parish, can hardly contain their excitement about becoming second grade readers. Everyday, my tadpoles work very hard to become second grade LEAP FROGS and to do that, we need some help.

The key to becoming a skilled reader is practice, practice, practice, both inside and outside of the classroom. Unfortunately, my students are met with challenges that deny them access to quality reading materials at home. During the day, we make use of the school's library and what our classroom has inherited, but there are simply not enough books to send home at the end of the day. Many of the books we do have are beyond my students' reading level and can therefore interest them, but not necessarily be conducive to improvement in their reading skills. A number of parents have asked for their children to take home reading materials, as transportation and funds to obtain books can be difficult for them, and I am now reaching out to you to provide us with the resources to make that happen!

Since a key part of learning to love reading is having a choice in what you read, I am asking for donations to build up a lending library full of 9 bins with 5-6 fiction books each to provide a level-appropriate and varied choice for my eager students. Additionally, I am asking for 2 sets of leveled nonfiction readers, as knowing how to access informative texts is a first grade expectation. The students will have access to these stories during library time, and then for home reading.

With your generosity, my children will learn to see reading as something other than a difficult, inaccessible, prescribed consequence of being in school. They will recognize the value of developing their reading skills in a meaningful way, which will invest them during classroom instruction and beyond. Please help give them the opportunity that their wealthier peers already have: the chance to explore reading in an exciting and motivating way, at any hour of the day!
