I am a special education resource teacher. Students in my classroom are identified with a range of exceptional needs including learning disabled, autism, behavior and emotionally disabled, and developmentally delayed. The students are served based on their individual needs for small group instruction in the academic areas of reading, writing, and math.

Many of the students that enter my classroom come from low socio-economic status families. As their teacher I am challenged to create unique and fun learning experiences that will improve their academic abilities. One area that continues to challenge my students is number sense and number recognition. These math skills are best improved through hands-on practice and repetition.

We are in need of math materials that will increase number sense and number recognition. Research indicates that children will learn more when multiple senses are incorporated into their learning experience. The materials for this project were chosen because of their ability to enlist multiple senses for better learning. The match the number counting kit and count and link will provide students with an opportunity build one-to-one correspondence. The tactile numbers will help improve number recognition by incorporating the sense of touch. The bug puzzles will help the students improve number sequencing through interactive visual puzzles which allows for self-checking. The addition and subtraction mats provide visual and hands-on manipulatives for students to improve math skills.

Your help will ensure that my students have materials that will impact their learning experience. Your support allows each student an opportunity to build on their ability through hands-on learning. Ultimately your support will help them thrive among their non-disabled peers.
