Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Despite what you may have heard about inner-city schools, my 9th grade students are intellectually advanced, academically committed, and will go on to be the next generation of successful, productive, and concerned citizens that make our nation great.

According to the results of a district-wide diagnostic assessment, over 75% of incoming 9th graders at my high school were deemed to be in need of intense academic intervention in terms of their writing skills. My students struggle for a variety of reasons, but some of the most significant are that fact that many of them are English language learners and many incorporate vernacular into their academic writing.

By having a class set of Oxford Desk Dictionaries, I can augment my student's vocabulary, expose them to the academic language that will assist them in understanding and achieving high scores on standardized assessments, and help them become fluent readers and writers.

During the hiring process for my current position, the HR director made a comment to me that would forever change my life as an educator. When I spoke to her regarding the many students I have come across in my district, some of whom walk home from school to a tent city under a nearby freeway overpass, she said "That student who is homeless and who society turns their back on may have the mind that one day cures cancer, but we will never know unless we give him or her all of the tools to succeed." This is the mantra that I repeat to myself over and over again: every morning over 150 parents send their best to me, and it is my job to give them the tools to succeed. With your help I can brighten the future of all of my bright students.
