The Mad Scientist Middle School Classroom

My students need 5 compound microscopes which will enable them to make scientific observations of cells, cellular organelles and their functions under various magnifications.

Grades 6-8

Currently, I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade middle school science to at-risk students in a high poverty African-American community in Chicago, Illinois.

Our school recently purchased science text books for the 110 students in the middle school department. However, microscopes are needed which will enable students to learn exactly what scientists do in a real- life science laboratory. The students are in need of hands-on opportunities which will prepare them for high school science.

My students need at least 10 microscopes which they will share during our unit on the cell (types of cells, cellular organelles, cellular functions (meiosis and mitosis). These students will learn the overall value of the microscope and magnification, its functions, and how the microscope can be used to observe other scientific phenomenon such as meiosis and mitosis. The study of microscopes, cells, meiosis and mitosis ensures that the students have a better chance of passing the annual standardized science test - ISAT (Illinois Standards Achievement Test) as they prepare to enter high school.

By funding this project, you ensure that African American at-risk students in a high poverty school will have an opportunity to experience a real life microbiology lab prior to entrance into high school. These students have had very little experience in the realm of science and technology. With your financial assistance, they will become well-rounded students and young scientists who may possibly develop into the Marie Curie's, James Watson's, and Francis Cricks of the 21st century.
