Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our students are our future and they must be taught to be Critical Thinkers and not just doers.

I believe science can be a wonderful hands-on learning experience for students. Science cannot be taught out of a book, science must be experienced. Schools are provided with basic science materials, certainly not a sufficient supply for interesting, thought-provoking, hands-on inquiry to foster a love of learning. I am able to create many interesting items for our science lab such as a large display magnet that was referenced during our magnetism unit (see the picture with this proposal). Unfortunately, I am not artistic enough to create body parts that are needed for our life science unit.

My 5th grade students study life science which includes the body systems and their functions. Presently I have a poster of body parts, not real effective! I need hands-on materials so the students could touch simulated body parts (heart, liver, etc...). I have requested model bodies with exposed vital organs, body systems stamps for reinforcement, models of major body systems (circulatory and digestive), and two body games for fun reinforcement. My 3rd and 4th grade students study plant life. We grow seeds in hydroponic farms, but it's just not enough. I have requested a small green-house where we can nurture seedlings and monitor the plant life cycle. I have also requested plant stamps for repeated use and reinforcement.
