Curl Up and Read to a Child in Your Lap Part 2

My students need 5 Playaways, for titles including "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Curious George", with 16 books, including "Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present" and "Lon Po Po: A Red-Riding Hood Story from China".

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Give a child in need the bedtime story he's been missing! I am a first year librarian serving children from pre-K to grade 5. Our school has unique needs due to the fact that 50% of our students live in poverty, and 70% of our students speak Spanish as their native language.

Do you remember curling up in your mom or dad's lap to listen to a story? Or maybe you shared a book while they tucked you in at night. Well, unfortunately, the students at my school miss out on this pleasant - and important - experience. Some live in homes with illiterate parents. Others have no books in their homes. Some barely even see their parents because they are working multiple jobs to make ends meet. For a variety of reasons, my students are not read to at home. This has a negative impact on their reading skills, their academic progress, and, sadly, their love of literature.

I need to bridge the gap between school and home and provide my students with enjoyable, meaningful reading experiences outside of the school day. For my littlest readers, I intend to accomplish this with story time kits. Students will be able to check out a kit from the library. Each kit will include a Playaway, which is an mp3 player that already has recorded stories loaded onto it. Students do not need a CD player, computer, or anything at all besides a triple-A battery to listen to it. The kit will also include a copy of each book featured on the Playaway. At home, students will be able to listen to a fluent narrator read each story while they follow along in the books. The kits will provide students with story time experiences that they are not getting otherwise. Studies show that listening to read alouds improves students' vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and, most importantly, increases their interest in reading!

By helping with this project, it will be as if you are pulling a child into your lap and providing him with a valuable reading experience he craves. My students will develop a much deeper love for literature while improving their reading skills at the same time.
