Help make Pre-Algebra and Algebra hands-on for my students! “When I was young, my ambition was to be one of the people who made a difference in this world. My hope is to leave the world a little better for having been there.” -Jim Henson I am a Title I Secondary Math teacher in public charter school located in a low-income area. The majority of my students (grades 6-10) are at least two years behind grade level in math. In addition, the majority of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

My students have very few math manipulatives available to them as they work to grasp the beginning concepts of Algebra. The concepts of Algebra do not come easily to everyone. Most of my students are two or more years below grade level in math. As a result, I have to work exceptionally hard to find interesting, interactive ways to not only close their math knowledge gap, but to also propel them forward towards future math success.

In effort to give my students more hands-on opportunities to grasp beginning Algebra concepts, I am requesting a variety of Pre-Algebra and Algebra manipulatives for use in my classroom. Items as simple as colorful number lines, BINGO games, and tiles help some students better understand the lessons that I am trying to teach them. It is so important that they truly master the early material presented in Algebra, since all of the math that they will take going forward will build on this foundation. I plan to integrate these requested manipulatives into my regular instruction. It will give me the opportunity to make my lessons even more interactive and interesting to the students and will make them more motivated about mastering the material covered.

I am working to build an environment in my classroom that stimulates learning and higher-level thinking among students that have traditionally struggled in math. With your donation, I will move closer to having the variety of tools necessary to truly engage my students in becoming great math students. Most of my students do not realize yet the value of a high-energy, interactive classroom. Help me continue to create that environment so that they truly begin to appreciate the opportunity to learn math that is currently in front of them!
