Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have become that Charlie Brown teacher that "wa, wa, wa's" at my students for hours on end. I am a first year freshman English teacher at a charter school in California.

Kids these days need more than the constant drone of my southern accent to get them excited about learning. My classroom currently operates without any support from technology: no computers, no overhead projector, no television, and definitely no LDC projector. The students' interest is waning and I feel it will take incorporating multimedia into classroom instruction to get this technology-depended generation of students invested. My students are visual learners and I want the resources to foster their learning style.

An LCD projector is an all-in-one multimedia tool. As an English teacher, I will be able to project student work for correction lessons, show relevant pop culture clips to connect students' lives to classical literature, play interactive review games, prepare visually stimulating PowerPoints, and allow me to teach rather than tell. Currently, I'm confined to the front of the room because I have to model notes and examples on chart paper; having an LCD projector will allow me to circulate the room and check understanding while the students copy prepared slides. This technology is at the students' request, and I agree it would positively impact their learning experience in my classroom.

We live in a technology-driven world where learning is visual and students have immediate access to information on their iPhones; how can a chalkboard and a barking teacher compete? I need to partner with the 21st century in order to engage my students in good-old-fashioned school-house learning. This project will change the dynamics of my classroom for the better and allow me to connect great works of literature to the students' lives today.
