Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My budding artists love hearing stories of eccentric painters! I teach Kindergarten through Grade 5 visual art at a neighborhood public school in a large urban city in Illinois. 96% of my students receive free or reduced lunch. My students are very enthusiastic learners, but they do not have much exposure to the arts in their daily lives. A few years ago, my school is was on watch for being under-performing, but we've worked very hard to turn things around and our students are now scoring very high. A big part of this turnaround is our emphasis on reading and writing in all subjects. I want to increase the role of reading and writing in my art room so I can help foster the importance of literacy to my students as we are creating beautiful artworks.

Our school is in a high-need community where resources are not readily available to my students. They are not familiar with art materials or art history. Their families do not take them to museums or enroll them in art classes. They have limited exposure to the arts, but they love art class and learning about artists. I started talking about Vincent Van Gogh with my fifth grade students 3 years ago. I was surprised how interested they were in learning more about his life and his artworks. Once we learned about him I taught my students about his painting style and then they each created an artwork using his signature bright colors and thick brushstrokes. They loved this unit! They felt so free and excited to experiment with the paint. Their results were inspiring. They were surprised and delighted by how well they all did and how each painting was unique. From this experience I knew I needed to build on my Van Gogh Unit. I wanted to incorporate a literacy element into the lesson.

As previously stated, my students love learning art history through my stories about artists of the past. There is a wonderful series of art history books that is geared towards elementary school students (grades 3-6). Each book focuses on the life of one artist and uses humorous pictures and captions as well as numerous examples of his or her artworks to tell their story. I've used these books in another school and the students love them! They are a great combination of reading practice and learning about art history. The books along with painting paper will enable me to carry out this inspiring unit with my fifth grade students.

Your help will make it possible for my students to learn about art history while they are practicing their reading skills and painting in the style of an important artist. Reading this book together while we are studying Vincent Van Gogh will deepen their knowledge of one of the world's greatest artists. Seeing examples of Van Gogh's works in the book will give my students a greater understanding of his vision and style. It will motivate them to create even more fantastic personal paintings and will give them an introduction to art history and the great painters who've shaped our world. Thank you for exposing my students to a deeper understanding of art.
