Buzzin' About Literature

My students need 30 copies of "The Secret Life of Bees", as well as the corresponding audio book and movie.

My students are always buzzing for a good read, and crave literature that is inspiring and captivating. I teach 8th grade English in an inner-city school in Missouri.

My students generally come to me 2-5 years behind grade level, often with other factors that categorize them as high risk. Many of them rarely leave their neighborhood. In our classroom, we read novels that stretch the imagination - that introduce us to other times, places and cultures. I am always looking for books that will hook my students, but also teach them sound lessons in literature. After all, our class goal is to grow 2 years in reading by the end of this school year - a lofty ambition that requires us to read, read, READ!

The Secret Life of Bees will have my students buzzing about how much they love reading. The book is full of themes and lessons that will push my students academically, while keeping them engaged and excited. Watching the movie after reading the novel will allow them to analyze the differences in literature and film, and respond to each.

You will make it possible for my students to connect with a quality book, and to meet their two-year growth goal in reading. My students will be buzzing with excitement when they read The Secret Life of Bees!
