"I teach earth and environmental science at a rural high-needs public high school in the mountains of NC.
Students are constantly hearing about global warming, the limits of fossil fuel supplies, and the low-pollution of renewable resources such as wind and solar. They are also aware of the new green jobs programs at our regional colleges. What is the fuss about? What does it mean for them? These are the questions some hands on activities can help answer!
With a sun tracker and a basic photovoltaic kit our students can understand how solar panels work and why their placement isn't random. With a wind power kit the students will be able to create their own mini-experiments that show the relationship between number and angle of blades or wind speed with energy output. With an introduction of MythBusters Energy Conservation and simple energy conversion kit, I can get the students hooked into the concept. Many of our students are already very interested in tinkering with motors and 'electrical stuff' and are oriented to the vocational pathways. As the alternative energy and green job markets grow I want to make sure the students have a sound grounding in the science and the possibilities!
Your thoughtful donation will provide our students with an opportunity to relate basic science concepts with global and local challenges. They will get the hands-on and inquiry experiences necessary for successful problem solving and college preparation in green jobs.
My students need 6 Science resources, including an Energy Conversion Kit, a MythBusters: Energy Conservation DVD and a Suntracker.
The cost of this proposal is $1,011, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ."

Dear Ricky, Progress Energy and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,
Thank you for your generous donation which will allow our students to develop a better understanding of the how alternative energies such as solar and wind actually work! I am excited for the opportunity to help my students understand the physics of alternative energies, to see the practicality beyond 'it's a hippie thing'. I know once the students explore how blade shape, wind velocity, cardinal points, latitude, and differential heating of metals affect electrical generation they will be better prepared for the competitive technical college courses and new green jobs developing in the area. Your forward thinking philanthropy will help not only the individual student or even just the community but will also help all humanity as we reduce our dependence on limited resource fuels and find creative ways to decrease our carbon footprints. Your kindness and thoughtful beneficence is very much appreciated!
With gratitude, Ms. N.
