I am a Special Education teacher in New York. This is my seventh year teaching students with special needs. I am currently teaching a class of 4th and 5th grade learning disabled students. My current class consists of children with cognitive abilities that range from the beginning 1st to mid 2nd grade levels. One of them is autistic, two are close to the M/R range, another has Asperger's Syndrome, and the remaining have suffered seizures and processing disorders.

My special ed. students must remain in school for what is called an "extended day". This is the time after those children whom have passed their New York State Exams are dismissed. An extra 45 minutes is mandated for those who do not pass NYS exams. My special ed. students must too participate in State exams. Of course they do not "pass" the tests. How can they, when they are functioning three years below their peers? This extra 45 minutes in school may not seem long, but to them it seems like forever.

Here's where you can help. I am asking for large magnetic coins, a telling time activity center, and workbooks they can write in and practice basic Math skills. I am sure they will have fun, and the time will be well spent. Extended Day time doesn't have to feel like they're being punished. Let's turn things around for them.

Your help on this project will enable my special students to have fun during extended day and not feel as if they are being punished for their disabilities.
