High Interest Classroom Library - Science and Social Studies

My students need 60+ fiction and nonfiction Science and Social Studies books, including works by Seymour Simon and Gail Gibbons, as well as Magic Tree House Series titles.

I am a fourth grade teacher at a school in a small, rural town in Central Massachusetts. Like many school districts, we are in need of literature that presents informational concepts in an interesting way to students. Many of the students have not had the opportunity to travel or to take many field trips, and high interest Science and Social Studies books will allow students to experience their world through stories and pictures.

Our district lacks the funds to purchase books that supplement the Science and Social Studies curriculum. These books are both fiction and nonfiction, and will allow teachers to both read them to students to introduce a concept, as well as to allow students to use during free time and for assistance during research. Currently, the school lacks books that enhance and work with the Science and Social Studies curricula. Students love having books available to read when they complete their in class assignments, however our classrooms do not have many titles available to students.

This project will allow us to purchase 60 various titles. The books will be housed in fourth grade classrooms, and they will be used by both teachers and students. Students are always looking for interesting reading opportunities, which are unfortunately not currently available. Additionally, these titles will allow students to learn more about the content areas of Science and Social Studies, as well as to develop nonfiction reading skills which is an area of need on our state's standardized tests.

Supporting this program will allow students to improve their nonfiction reading skills by making high interest Science and Social Studies books available to them in their classrooms. Your donation will not only make a difference by helping students to improve as readers and to develop reading skills, but will also expose students to all aspects of the fourth grade Science and Social Studies curricula.
