Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school serves students from all neighborhoods of Los Angeles, and many of these students come from different countries or speak other languages before English. The truly heterogeneous diversity gives students the chance to learn about one another's experiences, respect the cultures of others, and develop empathy. Some of our highest-need students come from homes that are not safe (or even no home) and face challenges beyond what most children have to endure just to get to school and be students.

Our students are an overwhelmingly interdependent group who support one another and encourage behaviors that will help achieve success.

They are dedicated to learning and are well-rounded in their activities and their talents. Our students want to make the world a better place, and the right educational opportunities will prepare them to do just that!

My Project

Next year Uni's MAST magnet is proud to expand our computer science offerings from AP CS A (the deep end of the pool) to a broader, more accessible introductory class. I will have a large chunk of our incoming freshmen in these classes, and want to support the development of both their skill and interest. I'm excited to expose and cultivate creative minds in the digital arts/computer science sector. In particular, I want to guarantee they have all the fun of a creative, immersive, digital arts class without skimming over the actual programming.

With this Oculus Go, students can see not only the fundamentals of coding but also the purpose and motivating goals by learning Javascript, C#, and game design while immersed in VR.

Despite our state having both Silicon Valley and the vibrant, creative LA tech community, our neighborhood students aren't getting to experience all that world can offer and how they can use its developments. California is far behind many states that have already guaranteed CS for all students or committed to having full-time CS teachers for students as young as the elementary grades. Many students, parents, and educators have misconceptions of what counts as CS and of who can/should be learning it.

Efforts to recruit more diverse candidates into this field sometimes water it down to just computer literacy or broad applications without seeing actual programming at all. Just getting people excited by trying high-tech tools as consumers may get them to take CS but doesn't help when they get to the harder stuff. Combining newly developed, exciting, professional-level technologies like VR/AR with true coding and low-cost hardware is the answer. It can help recruit more people while still giving them authentic learning that empowers them to continue advancing in the field.
