My students need a classroom set of 35 scientific calculators so that every student may use one on their standardized test, in addition to having access to one in their skills class and regular math class.

Do not pass on this chance to be a ray of sunshine to a student existing in a gloomy educational situation. I am an 8th grade math teacher at a school that has 85% of the student population living below the poverty level. In addition to their struggle with social economic status, a large percentage of our students qualify for special education. We lack the resources needed to supply our students with a classroom set of calculators. Our students have consistently scored low on standardized tests which has placed our school on probationary status with our state department. Despite the hard work of both teachers and students, we have not been able to surpass the level needed to be taken off probation for the last four consecutive years. Though we have shown growth, it has not been enough. Calculators are permitted on standardized tests. Furthermore, they are used by the majority of students that set the standard scale for levels of achievement on the mandated test. If our school could obtain a school-wide set of calculators, it would prove to be an incredible asset. Our students have amazing obstacles to overcome. Please be part of the solution and help us to level the educational playing field. You can make it possible for these students to break the cycle of generations of family members living on the welfare system. Success breeds success. The students often make it to 9th grade and remain there until they are old enough to drop out because they can not pass. The content standards mandated for the middle grades are often too hard for them to do without a calculator in a timely manner, which often results in them giving up without trying. Please foster their growth in knowledge by helping them work with the tools given to other schools. You can make it possible for the students to break the cycle of low test scores which will encourage them to strive for more success. We have 500 students; 30 calculators will fund one of our classrooms with a full set.
